India's highway network is growing at a pace never seen before. From six-lane expressways to last-mile rural roads, the choice of materials has never mattered more. At Art Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd., we deliver premium-grade Polymer Modified Bitumen (PMB) to highway contractors, EPC companies, and government projects across India since 2013.
Polymer Modified Bitumen is produced by blending standard bitumen with carefully selected polymer additives — most commonly Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene (SBS) and Styrene-Butadiene-Rubber (SBR). These polymers are incorporated under controlled high temperatures, creating a molecular network that fundamentally changes the binder's physical and chemical behaviour.
Rutting — permanent deformation from repeated heavy vehicle loads — is widespread in India. During summer, pavement temperatures exceed 50°C, softening conventional bitumen. PMB retains stiffness and elasticity, reducing rutting significantly.
Preferred for: National Highways, expressways, toll plazas, bus lanes, freight corridors, and urban arterials in hot-climate cities.
Every vehicle applies repeated bending stress (fatigue loading). Standard bitumen loses elasticity under millions of load repetitions, leading to cracking, potholes, and structural failure. PMB's polymer network absorbs and distributes stress, delaying fatigue cracking and extending service life by 40–60%.
In northern and northeastern states (Himachal, Uttarakhand, J&K, Sikkim, Arunachal), winter temperatures drop below freezing. Conventional bitumen becomes brittle and cracks — thermal cracking. PMB remains flexible at low temperatures, preventing water ingress and progressive damage.
Water is the primary enemy of pavements — it weakens the bond between bitumen and aggregate, causing stripping and potholes. PMB offers superior adhesion and resistance to moisture, making it ideal for India's heavy monsoon regions.
While the upfront cost of PMB is higher, the total cost of ownership is significantly lower. Fewer maintenance interventions, less frequent resurfacing, and reduced repair costs translate into substantial savings over the road's service life.
PMB is fully compatible with Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) — recycled material from old roads — reducing virgin aggregate demand. It also works with warm-mix asphalt technologies, cutting energy consumption and emissions. By extending pavement life, PMB inherently reduces total material consumption.
Manufactured as per IS:15462 specifications. Art Infrastructure supplies all three grades:
| PMB Grade | Penetration Range | Softening Point | Best Suited For |
|---|---|---|---|
| PMB 40 | 25–55 dmm | ≥ 60°C | High-volume expressways, hot climate regions |
| PMB 70 | 50–90 dmm | ≥ 55°C | National highways, arterial roads |
| PMB 120 | 90–150 dmm | ≥ 50°C | Cold regions, flexible pavements |
At Art Infrastructure, we manufacture and supply all three grades with full laboratory testing and certification.
Polymer Modified Bitumen represents a fundamental upgrade in road design and construction. From technical research, IRC specifications, and NHAI mandates to real-world performance, the evidence is clear: PMB-paved highways last longer, perform better under heavy traffic, resist India's climate extremes, and cost less to maintain.
Whether you need PMB for a greenfield expressway, highway resurfacing, bridge waterproofing, or toll plaza rehabilitation, Art Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd. is your trusted supply partner.
